Postpartum Services

Postpartum Depression (PPD) is a serious condition that affects between 10-20% of all women who give birth.  PPD most commonly presents within the first three months after childbirth, but can occur anytime during the first year.  PPD often goes undetected for various reasons, due to focus on the new baby as well as the stigma many women suffering from PPD feel that they should be "happy" and enjoying this special time.

Symptoms of Postpartum Depression

Although symptoms vary among women, the most common symptoms women experience are:

  • irritability
  • excessive worry/ anxiety
  • sad mood/ uncontrollable crying
  • feelings of guilt
  • hopelessness
  • changes in appetite
  • lack of feeling toward baby
  • sleep problems/ fatigue
  • lack of focus or attention
  • unexplained physical problems

What causes Postpartum Depression?

There is no known "cause" of PPD, however there are a number of risk factors that identify women who may be at higher risk of experiencing PPD.  These include:

  • personal or family history of clinical depression, anxiety, or other mental illness
  • previous experience with PPD or family history of PPD
  • depression or anxiety during pregnancy
  • high risk pregnancy and medical complications during birth
  • having a high needs baby(premature, medical complications, colic)
  • life stressors including marital or financial issues
  • infertility
  • lack of support or isolation
