Infertility is defined as a the inability for a couple to conceive after one year. It is estimated that 10-15% of couples of reproductive age struggle with infertility. In recent years, the number of couples seeling infetility treatment has increased dramatically due to the development of new nad more successful treatment options for infetility, increasing awareness of infertility treatment , and the postponement of childbearing for many women until later in life.
Parenthood is a major transition in adult life for men and women. The stress associated with the non-fulfillment of a wish for a child has been associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger, marital issues, sexual dysfunction and social isolation. Couples together experience stigma, a sense of loss, and decreased self-esteem as a result of infertility. Many women also report psychological distress as a result of infertility treatments themselves. Many medications associated with infertility treatments have been shown to contribute to anxiety and depressive symptoms. Several studies suggest that psychotherapy and support groups can help decrease stess and mood symptoms and increase fertility rates.
